In the summer of 1998 our 15-year-old son, Alyesha began to suffer from a rash all over his body and began having trouble remembering things. He was put in the local hospital, from there sent to the regional hospital and finally to the RDKB in Moscow. In the course of three days this all happened and my first husband basically abandoned us. The diagnosis that we received can as a complete shock- acute myeloblastic leukemia. I will never understand how such a healthy child could be stricken with this horrible disease. The medicine needed for the treatment was not available and we were going to have to buy it on our own. I work as a teacher and have not received a paycheck in 6 months so this was a huge problem for us. We got money the only way that we could, by asking people to help us. The children at the school where I teach even collected money to help us and sent it to us.

Thanks to the Drs. in the Hematology Department at the RDKB the treatment was a success. For two and a half years my Alyesha was in remission. He went to school again, hung out with his friends and in summer went fishing. This year Alyesha was to enter the 11th grade and was preparing for his entrance exams to college. But the illness returned and quickly changed all of his future plans. Now in order to save my son's life he will need to undergo a bone marrow transplant. The operation is extremely expensive. In our country it is impossible for an average person to even earn this much money. We need the money to provide Alyesha with the proper nourishment in the hospital, for additional tests and for treatment of the donor bone marrow. My son is already 16 years old so we no longer qualify for types of government assistance.

My current husband and I ask all of you that are able to help to please help us get our son well again. The Doctors are doing all they can but without the money for the medicines it just won't work. We will be forever grateful to all who respond and are able to assist us in our time of need.
