Oleg Shatalov is in Munich.
The boy has completed a course of radiation therapy, and now
his physicians are deciding if a surgery is necessary.
28.02.2007 The problems with paying for
Oleg Shatalov's treatment in
Munich have been successfully resolved. In the nearest few days,
our foundation will transfer 10,000 euro to the account of the
German clinic, and one Russian insurance company (whose administration
has got into direct contact with Oleg's parents) has promised to
provide the remaining part of the sum. We are removing Oleg's story from the
first page of our site and looking forward to hearing the news from Munich.

Oleg Shatalov and his mother
left for Germany yesterday. The administration of the Munich clinic
has agreed to take the boy for treatment after receiving only
one-half of the sum, because it is impossible to postpone
the surgery any more. We thank the benefactors for such prompt
help. The remaining part of the sum should be raised and transferred
to Germany in two weeks.

Oleg is 13 years old. The boy felt unwell in the summer of 2006,
during training at a summer sports camp. His right leg ached, and
acute pains appeared in his back. After an examination, a terrible
diagnosis was pronounced: neuroectodermal tumor of the small pelvis
with growth into the spinal canal, stage 3. The boy's condition
deteriorated day after day. The pains became worse, and
the boy couldn't step on this leg. Only strong analgesics helped.
He walked only on crutches.
Three weeks later, in September, Oleg had a serious operation at the
Burdenko Institute of Neurosurgery in Moscow. A small part of the tumor
was removed from the spine, but the major part remained.
Oleg has already spent 4 months at the Department of Oncology, RCCH.
He has gone through six cycles of severe chemotherapy. His condition
has improved to some extent, and the pains are not so strong.
Doctors of the Munich hospital have agreed to take Oleg for treatment
and to perform another serious surgery: removal of the remaining part
of the tumor. The boy's condition requires immediate surgical
intervention at the moment when remission is attained, while
the growth of tumor cells is blocked by the chemotherapy. The surgery
costs quite a lot: 30,000 euro, according to the account from
the Munich clinic.
Oleg's parents Eugenia and Igor ask for help. They address everybody
who can help Oleg become a healthy boy again, live and smile just
like all children, study and indulge in sports.
The doctor's comment
The patient's condition shows slight positive dynamics regarding
the primary tumor after partial oncotomy and six cycles of
polychemotherapy. Presently it is appropriate to perform
surgery with maximum possible removal of the tumor, for
both diagnostic and curative purposes. Considering the complex
localization of the tumor and its dissemination, surgical
intervention with the best result is possible at a foreign hospital.
The Munich University Surgical Clinic (Germany) has agreed to perform
the surgery. It should be conducted in three or four weeks after
the last cycle of polychemotherapy, that is, on February 26-28, 2007.
