Nikita Chalenko
18.07.2004 Nikita Chalenko died.
Nikita was suffering from juvenile rheumatic arthritis, systemic form.
All possible drugs and all medical means were tried, but nothing helped.
Then the last chance existing at present was used: bone marrow autotransplantation. It was preceded by high-dose chemotherapy, which was too much for the little boy's exhausted organism. Lung bleeding began, and Nikita died. He had autotransplantation in another department, and everybody wept when he was transferred there from his "native" Department of Immunology. All people around loved him: the doctors, the children, the parents. The doctors were amazed by his courage in the struggle with the disease and called him a "real steadfast tin soldier." Nikita was an only child in his family, and we can only hope that God will give his parents the strength to endure this grief.

26.02.2004 For Nikita Chalenko, the bill for the corset (9250 roubles) was paid, and the corset is now under preparation at the Central Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedy. Nikita is feeling better. He has promised that he will stand up in his corset and even start walking by his birthday, which is on March 17. Nikita has got a good appetite, although the doctors are gradually reducing his dose of Prednisolone. Unfortunately, his disease is still active, and it is too early to think when and how he will be discharged from hospital. Still, some improvement due to Mabtera is observed.

14.01.2004 Two small (100 mg) vials of Mabtera worth 27,541.14 roubles were bought for Serezha Vertkov and Nikita Chalenko.

08.01.2004 An anonymous contributor transferred 30 USD for Nikita via the online credit card system.

05.01.2004 Irina bought Mabtera (total cost 69,461.59 roubles) for Serezha Vertkov and Nikita Chalenko.

24.12.2003 An anonymous contributor transferred 150 USD and Alina Tulchinsky transferred 70 USD for Nikita via the online credit card system.
This letter is a plea to everybody who can help in my trouble. A child's illness is the worst thing that can happen in a human life. And my 4-year-old son, Nikita Chalenko, is very gravely ill. There are several diagnoses, but the most serious disease, which requires constant treatment, is rheumatic arthritis, systemic form. This disease is grave and still scarcely studied in medicine, and its treatment includes expensive drugs.

This illness struck us all of a sudden a year and a half ago, but still we have not managed to cope with the acute stage. We live in the town of Angarsk, Irkutsk region. We spent a year at the regional hospital, and now doctors in Moscow have been trying to improve Nikita's condition for six months. However, very expensive medicines are required. At present, a course of Mabtera is vitally important for my child. But I have no money to pay for it.

Nikita is my only child, the best joy and the little shining sun of our family.
We have longed for this child for a very long time. I had to go through several operations myself before my son could be born. Up to three years old, before he fell ill, Nikita had been a very active and inquisitive child, restless and brave. It is so terrible when a disease makes a merry boy behave and look like a tiny old man.

Nikita is a smart boy. He already knows the whole ABC and likes to play with a computer. But the disease does not allow him to go to the kindergarten or to communicate with other children. He is deprived of chilhood. Constant pains, hospital beds and infusions! During the last year he had to bear things that not every grown-up person can endure. And we have already spent so much money and energy that it is now impossible to buy more expensive drugs. I had to quit my job for the time being, because the child's condition requires constant care. Nikita's grandmother and grandfather have only their old-age pensions. So I am asking everybody who can help us in buying Mabtera for Nikita to respond to this letter.

Thank you very much.

Nikita Chalenko's mother,
Elena Gennadievna
