Ilya Averin
27.07.2004 Dear friends, Ilya Averin died. It happened the night before July 25, on Sunday. Unfortunately, the doctors could not save the child. Please pray for the boy's soul.
We are sincerely grateful to all people who prayed for Ilya, expressed their compassion, and supported Ilya and his mother during all these hard days. We thank everybody who responded and helped in the struggle for Ilya's life: the Foundation of the Andrei Kuraev forum and personally Elena V. Trostnikova, and also Maria, Raisa, Stanislav, the parish of the Church of St. Nicholas in Pyzhi, Filipp and Ekaterina, Eugeni, Yana, Pavel, Anna, Sergei, Irina, Olga, Victor, Vladimir, Tatiana, Maria, Eugeni, Galina, Irina, Anastasia, Ekaterina, and all other benefactors.
When children die, we see that our power is limited. The doctor's skill and the money cannot resolve everything. But, nevertheless, we should not lose heart. Many children recover and need our help for this!

27.05.2004 Ilya Averin has got no signs of infection now. But the bone marrow does not yet work, and the doctors suggest a repeated course of antithymocyte globulin (ATG).

24.03.2004 Dear friends, we are very grateful to everybody who has helped Ilya Averin. The Boomerang Foundation bought 10 vials of Cancidas, and five more vials (70 mg each) worth 117,124.70 roubles were bought due to your assistance. Dr. Maschan, who heads the Department of General Hematology, says that the fungal lesion of soft nasal tissues has been localized because of Cancidas and granulocyte transfusions. So no more Cancidas is needed so far. Now the doctors will wait for Ilya to respond to the treatment of his original disease, that is, aplastic anemia.

16.03.2004 sosDear friends,
Ilya Averin urgently needs our help. His life now fully depends on granulocyte transfusions and treatment with Cancidas, a modern antifungal medicine.

Ilya has got aplastic anemia, extra severe form. At the end of February, he has developed a grave complication: bacterial and fungal sepsis. The doctors have managed to cope with the bacteria, but the fungi do not recede. Moreover, they have spread from his nasal passages to the sinuses and the area of lesion continued to increase until recently. The boy received Cancidas from March 4 to 12, along with granulocyte transfusions, and there appeared some hope. During this treatment, the area of the fungal lesion lessened, nose bleedings stopped, the fever abated. But this medicine is no longer available at the hospital and must be bought. Stable improvement of Ilya's condition is possible only if he receives treatment with this drug for at least four weeks. Otherwise, the fungi will inevitably spread again and, as the doctors say, will reach the brain and other internal organs, finally killing the child.

One vial (70 mg) of Cancidas costs about 800 USD. Ilya's mother cannot buy it. We hope that you will help her!

Ira transferred 110 USD and Tatiana Latypova transferred money for Ilya via the online credit card system.

Ilya Averin Dear ladies and gentlemen,
you can save my child's life!

Just as many mothers, I believed and hoped that I would be able to overcome anything and cope with any ordeals for my children's sake. But I could not foresee the terrible thing that would happen to Ilya, my younger son.

Everything started from small bruises over his body. Then there were large hematomas. A huge bruise after running into a doorpost, bruises on the bridge of his nose or under his eyes after falling on the ground... First I thought that he was having fights with somebody and not willing to tell me because of boyish principles. And I told him to stop going to the hiking club. Then I suspected my elder son of hitting his brother too strong when playing. But when Ilya developed a rash and fever, I was really worried.

A day later, we were urgently taken to the Pevrozavodsk Republican Hospital. The doctors suspected acute leukemia. First I was in despair, tried to understand how it could happen, but then I started fighting for my son's life. And all the time I prayed to God that this diagnosis might yet prove wrong. Yes, it was wrong. But our real diagnosis was no less serious: aplastic anemia, extra grave form.

We hoped to receive help at the Russian Children's Clinical Hospital in Moscow. Ilya went through the first course of antithymocyte globulin therapy comparatively easily, and the days of waiting began. The most difficult time is that of aplasia, when the bone marrow cannot produce blood cells. Various infections develop and further aggravate the bleedings, which are frequent and hard to bear even by themselves. For three days out of forty, Ilya had a renal bleeding; there were also nose bleedings from morning till night. But the worst thing is that he has got fungal lesions. Cancidas, a modern antifungal drug, is vitally important for him, because other drugs are not efficient enough. Every hour is important, because tumor necrosis and sepsis have already started to develop.

It is painful to see how Ilya, so merry and active before the disease, is simply vanishing in front of my eyes. It is not yet too late to save him, but we have no money to buy Cancidas. I have been a widow for four years. I bring up my children all by myself: Ilya is 13, and Roman, who lives at my sister's home now, is 15 years old. I cannot work now, because I am taking care of Ilya at hospital, and our only income is my widow's pension. And we need 20,000 USD to buy 30 vials of the medicine that can save Ilya. Our relatives are not numerous, and they cannot provide such a sum, in spite of all their concern for Ilya.

Svetlana Averina,
town of Pitkyaranta, Republic of Karelia
