Lyudmila Ulitskaya’s book When a Man Went to Hospital

Lyudmila Ulitskaya’s book When a Man Went to Hospital, written to mark the 20th anniversary of the RCCH Benevolence Group, is dedicated to the memory of Father George Chistyakov, our spiritual shepherd, mentor and friend.

The writer sees herself a mere compiler of this documentary book rather than its author: the work includes stories from volunteers, patients and doctors at RCCH, as well as excerpts from sermons given by Fr. Alexander Men and Fr. George Chistyakov. It also contains some autobiographical notes by Fr. George, memories of him, and materials from the Russian-French workshop on psychological help for children with serious illnesses, palliative care and socio-psychological rehabilitation, which was held for a number of years in the RCCH. In its final chapter the book gives a list of those who have participated in the RCCH Benevolence Service activities during its 20-year lifespan.
